LED upgrades / Existing systems, practical options

Commercial LED Lighting Retrofits in Indianapolis

Replacing aging lighting starts with understanding what is already installed. Edge LED Lighting evaluates compatible LED upgrades and replacement fixtures, then coordinates the agreed work with our in-house installation team.

A retrofit is a decision about the complete lighting system

Older fluorescent, metal-halide and other HID systems can raise questions about maintenance, uneven coverage and suitability for today's operations. A change in racks, workstations or operating hours may be just as important as lamp age. We review the existing layout and your concerns before choosing how to upgrade it.

A compatible retrofit can retain parts of an existing fixture, while a replacement fixture changes more of the system. Neither approach is automatically best for every building. Condition, distribution, installation requirements and the availability of suitable components help determine which options are worth considering.

01 / Project considerations

Compatibility before component selection

Existing lamps, ballasts, sockets, housings and supply conditions need to be identified. Some LED options require a particular ballast arrangement; others involve a different wiring configuration. A matching base or approximate wattage does not establish that a proposed lamp or kit is compatible with the existing system.

We review manufacturer requirements for the selected option and whether retaining the housing makes practical sense. Damaged reflectors, deteriorated supports or poor distribution may favor replacement. Electrical conditions and any changes outside the agreed lighting scope need to be discussed rather than assumed.

  • Lamp and ballast identification, voltage and wiring
  • Housing condition and manufacturer compatibility
  • Mounting arrangements and scope boundaries

02 / Project considerations

Replacement is not always a one-for-one swap

A new LED fixture distributes light differently from an older source. Retaining every old position can reproduce dark aisles or leave unnecessary light in unused areas. We consider mounting height, fixture spacing and the current floor layout when comparing retrofit and replacement options.

For warehouse aisles, exterior areas or complex interiors, a photometric layout may help review expected coverage. Controls also need system-level consideration: occupancy response, dimming or daylight operation should suit the selected driver, wiring and how the facility operates. These capabilities are not included by default in every upgrade.

  • Current tasks, obstructions and layout changes
  • Light output and distribution rather than wattage alone
  • Control compatibility and appropriate planning depth

Scope, access and utility-program questions

Removal work, lift access, ceiling conditions and material handling can influence installation planning. Active production, tenant restrictions or stocked aisles may require different work zones or schedules. Our in-house installation team coordinates the agreed work with your facility contact, with interruptions discussed before the project begins.

Some utility programs may support eligible LED upgrades, but the serving utility, current rules and selected equipment must be checked. Do not treat an estimated incentive as an approved payment or order equipment on that assumption. Where relevant, program timing and documentation should be considered before installation.

  • Existing fixture count and safe access to work areas
  • Removal, disposal and project-specific coordination
  • Potential preapproval and equipment requirements

From your facility to a practical plan

  1. STEP 01

    Document the existing system

Share fixture or lamp details, counts, mounting heights and the lighting concerns you want to address.

  2. STEP 02

    Compare upgrade approaches

Review compatible retrofit options against replacement fixtures and any layout or controls needs.

  3. STEP 03

    Define the proposal

Confirm proposed equipment, installation boundaries, access requirements and conditional utility-program questions.

  4. STEP 04

    Coordinate installation

Arrange access, removal work and scheduling with our in-house installation team and your site contact.

Questions before you begin

Can our fluorescent or metal-halide fixtures be converted to LED?

There may be suitable options, but fixture condition, compatibility, wiring and distribution must be reviewed. We compare retaining compatible parts with replacing the fixture rather than assume every existing housing can be converted.

Will the LED replacement use the same wattage?

Wattage measures electrical input, not the distribution or useful light delivered to your work areas. Selection should consider output, mounting and coverage. We do not prescribe one wattage or a fixed reduction for all retrofits.

Can we upgrade one area at a time?

A phased scope may be appropriate depending on circuits, operations, fixture compatibility and access. We discuss how phases affect lighting consistency and work coordination. Any utility-program rules should also be checked before splitting a project.

Can you guarantee savings or rebate approval?

No. Energy use depends on selected equipment, operating hours and controls, while incentives depend on the utility and current program. Any estimates require project-specific assumptions, and approval or payment is not guaranteed.
